Last Day-Open Water on Long Island

The swimmers are now in the air on their way back home. Our last stop was in New York with one last host; Mrs. Bea Hartigan. A grandmother and feisty New Yorker, Ms. Bea met us at La Guardia airport personally. Outside was Holder another USA swimming local official whose child is also long out of the sport. The kids were happy to be met in a real American yellow school bus from the company that Holder manages-he was more than happy to give up 6 hours waiting, driving, and loading luggage in the New York summer for a group of Aussies he had never met. The next day his bus was the shuttle before and after the swim. During the race, Holder did some time officiating. I would comment that this bus was not like the ones I remember. The school buses of my youth were about a city block long and had no AC or seat belts. This 20 passenger bus was brand new with both. Holder, originally German with a wife from Singapore, is a proud American father of a former distance swimmer now US Army officer soon to return to Afghanistan. "Swimming is the best sport for kids. I owe it to all of the others who helped my boy. It is no trouble."
Ms. Bea had arranged for the use of the firehouse to serve lasagna and salad. Cam told me he has had more salad on this tour than in his entire life; not sure if he meant that as a good thing. Ms. Bea's son in law is the assistant chief of the volunteer fire station and was to host Max. The view over the Huntington Bay was amazing. Hopefully the swimmers will provide photos when the edit this blog.
Our host families were excited to meet the kids and ask questions about kangaroos. Max was delayed in being picked up because of a suspicious order alarm that sent a half dozen men from everywhere in the area to the fire station to suit up. The only photo I do have is of Max waiting for the all clear. The comment was made that if we called the fire station every time there was a suspicious order on the this tour...anyway.
All of our host families have been incredible. Gina Hoile from Grand Rapids got Lucy to a doctor when her illness wasn't getting better. Rushing past 3 nurses all of whom were saying the doctor cannot see her, Lucy was seen and treated. Gina is a fireball of a swim mom originally from a much larger swim team in Chicago. That Chicago intensity does not seem diminished even after her ongoing battle against breast cancer. Still currently on chemo, Gina was a flurry of activity insisting on looking after everyone. After we left Mun spent his time in Grand Rapids with Gina's husband Nick who drove him around in a competition tricked out M3 BMW from his company which makes "big boys' toys." They bought Mun lunch and waited with him before his 330pm flight which ended up being a 50 hour journey. Well done Mun keeping your cool throughout a painful ordeal. At last report, Mun's luggage was either in storage or already in Australia. Virgin Australia...ouch.
Back to New York, the Huntington swim was in water that was a little colder than claimed. The younger races involved swimming back and forth through anchored boats and other swimmers heading straight out and back. Alex and Phoebe had a ferocious battle with Phoebe leading at the halfway and Alex taking the finish. The girls were determined not to get robbed of the placing as happened at the Motor City Mile. Alex hit her arm on something hard, maybe Phoebe, and had to be taken to the hospital to be checked out. In the end it was muscle spasms from the hit made worse by the cold but turned out to be OK...and they got there first and second placings.
The course was a little long which sometimes happens in open water with shifting tides yet both Tom and Anna raced very hard in their 5k. The conditions at Hazelwood will be a cake walk in comparison. Sarah also had a very impressive 3k. Tash and Cam had a more casual 5k but finished.
In the 10k event, Jack Fabian's Greenwood kids made a 9 hour drive after their four weeks of racking up nearly 400,000k just to race us. They looked great and our time spent pool racing, visiting, and not having a normal training schedule showed. After an intense start, Max had a shoulder lock up and made only 2 hours into the race. Beth and Seb raced on to a strong finish and at least a valuable lesson learned.
My comments on blogs are not a play by play so those not mentioned; it ain't personal.
After the race, we were driven by Michael and another driver who are fond of saying "Forgettaboutit" in a strong New York accent. Thanks to Heidi for setting it up.
The kids went to the massive Roosevelt Field Mall where they ate, shopped, and ate.
With only minor drama at check in, all the kids and Amy made it to Qantas for the return trip. Amy is to be commended for her calm in the last week and it was useful here certainly when on the last two flights there were challenges at check in.
Overall, the trip was, as always, unbelievable. The complexity of putting all of these elements together could never happen without the support of Surrey Park back in Australia and the amazing people we get to meet here in the USA and Cayman.
The homestays provided an element that money cannot buy and I hope that all of the swimmers keep in contact.
Every single swimmer learned valuable lessons about themselves and their swimming. Whether a skill from an Olympian or coach, or a new perspective from a host family. We were cooked for, transported, honored, and given access that normally no one gets.
The Surrey Park kids are great kids. We were unlucky with some illness that started early on the tour and spread. Still, a lot of in season, lifetime bests, and even national qualifying standards were found at a time of the year that very few Australian kids normally swim fast. We faced the usual and unusual challenges that encourage kids to find strengths they never knew they had. For me, getting to know these kids "warts and all" makes them in my eyes even greater. I only ask that they hold onto the lessons, both pleasant and unpleasant, and use them. This has been a special time and a series of unique experiences that at some point will come up in conversations for the rest of your lives.
Cayman, Rockwall, Austin, Detroit, Grand Rapids, New York...piece of cake...forgettaboutit.

Grand Rapids and to New York

So today was the last day on the Grand Rapids meet at Calvin College. A lot of people swum PB's and Beth made her open national cut in the 1500 metre event. The people that were sick are feeling better after being treated by a doctor. We were hosted by some amazing families for the first night, and then stayed at a beautiful suite hotel. A big thank you to East Grand Rapids for hosting the wonderful meet. Currently we are travelling to the airport in the RV, and then flying to New York, where we are going to be met by more host families and going to have dinner at a fire station provided by the organisers of the open water swim.

Friday, July 9, 2010

So its been a couple days since the last blog and we have done plenty since last time. firstly we had the motor city mile and 5km race in the detroit river. pretty much everyone placed so most people won prizes including towels, hoodies and bags. afterwards we piled into the RV and van for the road trip across the state to Grand Rapids.
When we finally got to the pool we got wet and then met our host families who we were going to be staying with for that night. the next morning we trained and then chilled for the rest of the day until the meet started that night. there were plenty of good swims on the first day which were timed finals of the 1500, the 400im and the 50 free. today there were prelims for the 200free, 100back, 200im, 100breast, 200fly and although there were many good swims that made finals, due to an issue with the electricity the finals were postponed to tomorrow afternoon. because we finished early tonight we all went out to a movie, girls saw the new twilight movie YAAY and boys saw grown ups. we all enjoyed the movies and we are packing for our trip to new york tomorrow.

1st 200 IM - 2.04 (won by 3 seconds)

love you eugene ;)

Special 5th July Blog Update

So yesterday was the last day of the meet and also the 4th of july here. there were some great swims throughout the meet and we are still voting on the PB of the meet.
This morning seb and I got the opportunity to train with the University of Texas mens team who are also the reigning NCAA national champions. National team members this morning in our group included Aaron Piersol, Michael Klueh and Eric Shanteau. Coach Eddie Reese included us in everything they did from warmup to warmdown and it was an amazing experience.
Next we met up with Mr. and Mrs. Flowers at Denny's for unlimited pancakes which was also amazing, especially after a long practice in the morning. After breakfast we stopped at the University of Texas merchandise store to stock up on Texas brand stuff.
Afterwards Dr. Bell and Mrs. Bell had us over for lunch at their summer home at Lake Travis where we enjoyed some openwater style swimming, canoeing and homemade lemonade with 3 time olympic champion Sandy Neilson-Bell and world famous sports phsycoligist Dr. Keith Bell.
now everyone is packing and preparing for our flight to Mowtown.

Early Morning Report Just In...

So, while some of us grownups are ready to tuck in for the night, the kids are waking up to a training session under the North American, 5th of July sunshine. And they're especially lucky to be in the company of the University of Texas team, including Olympian, Aaron Piersol amoungst others!

The Texas Open has been huge for everyone... with many amazing lifetime bests... I've heard that Seb, Beth and Max all did us proud with some amazing 1500 results to close the meet. Promises have come from all swimmers that pictures and results will be posted tonight - their time (which means tomorrow morning!).

Suffice to say, they're all swimming fast and having a ball. Look out Motown!!! Motor City is the next destination!

PS - Well done Eugene, and all of the Aussie Gold team in NZ! And awesome results to all of the SP Swimmers enjoying the 'independence' of swimming USA-style!

Stroke Technique and Mario Kart

hey everyone,
yesterday Drew and coach Neil gave us some advise on our turns and starts. It was good to get some feed back from some former Olympians on how we could do to improve them. when we are not swimming the boys are normally chilling out back at coach toms house play Mario kart on his projector. Drew now thinks he is good because he got lucky in a couple of races (every other race he is being demolished). Mun still has not got his luggage yet and today is our last day in Dallas. We are leaving for Austin early in the morning and will be on a plane this time tomorrow (man we will struggle!)

Hey guys.
Yesterday we went to Miss Loraine's house (one of the officials here in Dallas) and it was huge! It also had heaps of open space. I'm pretty sure everyone enjoyed the nice relaxation we had there and the amazing dinner +dessert which they made for us.
Not too much excitement today. First we had a pretty hefty practice in the morning and then some breakfast. After that, we went to Shenanigan's for bowling where Dave got absolutely demolished by Beth. Now we're just chilling for a bit and will get to training afterwards.

Team Two is in the Air!

Everything went just swimmingly at 4am this morning at Melbourne airport. While all of the other travellers in the airport looked bleary eyed with their early start, our group were ready to go... check them out! Tash, Anna, Amy, Sarah and Tom are on their way. USA here they come!!

First Week and 3 Olympic Gold Medallists!

What a sensational week to the start of our tour. Not only have the Alex and Phoebe had personal sessions from BJ Bedford to work on backstroke starts but also Cam was fortunate enough to have a one on one session with Neil Walker to improve his dive start. I would also personally like to thank '92 olympics gold medlist and the world record holder in the 200m breastroke for the longest period for men gave me incredible adivce on my breastroke. We look foward to the upcoming days as we encounter many more great athletes.

cam's update

hi everyone, its cam here,
today was a pretty intense day, we had two taining sessions, morning and night, and i also had a weights session with coach tom. their weights room was pretty amazing, it had tons of different machines. in between the two sessions, seb, euge and i chilled at our host house. in the afternoon session neil walker was helping me with my starts, videoing them and showing me what i could do better. for dinner we went to a place called chipotles, which is like a mexican restaurant. we all got burritos, which are very hard to eat without spilling everywhere. looking forward to max arriving tomorrow, and another day of hard training.

thank you

OLYMPIC CHAMP BJ BEDFORD WITH ALEX/PHOEBE

Thank you BJ Bedford for helping Phoebe and Alex with our underwater sub kick and our backstroke starts. we much appreciate it. she helped us use shimmer kicks off every wall and work on our starts.
also we'd like to thank our homestays in the Cayman Islands for looking after us and taking us to training morning and night.
we r now safely in Dallas with our new homestay families.
hi to all. xoxo ALEX AND PHOEBE

23/6/10 Day 1 in Dallas.Texas

Walking into Neil Walker's pool at Rockwall aquatics was a very impresive way to start off the morning. First of all for a high school team to have an 8 lane 50m pool, a 4 lane 25 yards pool and seating to hold up to 800 spectators is amazing to see. The other facilities of the weight rooms, change rooms and meeting room specifically for swimmers where swimmers can eat, chill out and watch videos on a projector were all world class. Coach Neil and Tom have been very generous giving us full access to the pool and the meet on the weekend should be a great racing experiences for all of us.

Yes mum i did get the email about the homework......

Are these guys having a ball, or what?!!

Born to Shop

When it comes to shopping, every girl knows she must fuel up to be ready for the demands of the day ahead...

So, first stop, a beautiful buffet breakfast at the five-star Westin Hotel, right on the beach...

Then it was smiles all around as the dedicated shoppers headed to town...

...and the adjacent craft market!

Even when the skies opened up with some big rain, Caribbean style,
our shoppers were not deterred!

Stingray City!!! (and a blog entry from one of the boys!)

Have received some wonderful updates this morning from our hostess with the mostest, Sara Mackay. This photo was taken as the group headed off on a catamaran to Stingray City. Rod at Red Sail Sports is our hero, as is BJ Bedford, American Olympic gold medalist who joined the team for the adventure...

And a couple of blog entries from the swimmers...

On Saturday we all attended the Flowers 1 mile Sea Swim. The swim was amazing, it was a very hot day, and the water was crystal blue. Everyone did great swims.
Overall Eugene came 4th, Seb came 8th, Beth came 12th, Cam came 15th, Lucy came 18th, Phoebe came 26th and Alex came 37th.
And Drew, who got beaten by the little girls, came 43rd. Both Beth and Eugene got trophies. Eugene placed 3rd guy and Beth was 2nd girl.
After the race random prizes were given out, Cam won a Cayman Airways air ticket and Lucy won a pass to swim with dolphins. Everyone had a great day.

Seb

Sunday we all went on a catamaran to ‘stingray city’ with lots of other people to swim with the stingrays. It was a great experience for us all. The water was nice, warm and very shallow so we could all stand up to see the stingrays. At first there were lots and lots of shrieking coming from the girls as the stingrays swam around them but they soon got used to them. There were several of them, big and little. Drew caught us a couple of big stingrays which we got to hold.
After that we all got back on the boat and travelled to the MacKay’s beach house for lunch. Lunch was great we had sausages and salad, which Cam actually ate some of! And popsicles. We all returned to our home stays exhausted from the awesome day we had.

Thank you Cayman

A very big thank you to everyone in the Cayman Islands who did so much to welcome and look after our swimmers this past week. What generous hosts you all have been. Thank you again to Mr. Frankie Flowers and his family for their inspiring dedication to swimming and for hosting such a world class event. And to the Mackays and other host families, you have been amazing once again. Please do make your way downunder some day soon so we can do the same!
PS - Drew - the Tim Tams are all yours!!
